We spend so much energy on what goes in the mouth that we forget the body has another way in. The skin is the largest organ you own, and some of the oldest wellness traditions work through it rather than around it. This is the shelf for that: things you soak in, apply, and draw out, not things you swallow.
Draw it out: bentonite clay
Bentonite is a volcanic clay that binds to oil and impurities on contact. Mix it with water or apple cider vinegar into a paste, wear it as a mask once or twice a week, and rinse. One tub lasts a very long time. It is about as simple and cheap as skincare gets, and it does one job well.
Bentonite Clay
Trace Minerals
- Form
- Pure sodium bentonite clay powder, 16 oz
- Dose
- Mix 1 part clay to 3 parts water or apple cider vinegar. Apply as a mask 1 to 2 times a week
A volcanic clay that binds to oil and impurities, used topically to draw them out of the skin. One tub lasts a very long time.
Topical use. Do not mix or store it in metal, which blunts the clay.
Never mix or store bentonite in metal. The clay reacts with it and loses its pull. Glass or wood, and a non-metal spoon.
Soak in it: herbal baths
This is the ritual I keep coming back to. Classical Chinese medicine has a long tradition of herbal soaks, blends of adaptogenic herbs you dissolve into a warm bath or foot soak so the body pulls what it needs through skin and warm water. It pairs with bodywork better than almost anything, because it does the same thing from the outside: it tells the nervous system the day is over.
Herbal Soaks & Supplements
Jadience
- Form
- Traditional Chinese herbal bath and foot soaks, paired with supplements
- Dose
- Dissolve in a warm bath or foot soak, or use the paired supplement as directed
Adaptogenic herb blends you soak in rather than swallow, built on the classical idea that the body pulls what it needs through warm water and skin. A recovery ritual that pairs with the bodywork practice.
A collection rather than a single product. Match the soak to what you are working on, from recovery to circulation.
Handle with respect: essential oils
Oregano essential oil is one of the most concentrated things on this entire site. Rich in carvacrol, it is potent enough that the rules around it are not optional. It goes in a diffuser, or heavily diluted in a carrier oil on the skin. Never neat, never straight on the skin, and an essential oil is not the same thing as the oil of oregano softgels you swallow.
Oregano Essential Oil
Young Living
- Form
- Steam-distilled oregano essential oil, 15 mL
- Dose
- Dilute heavily in a carrier oil before topical use, or diffuse
One of the most potent essential oils there is, rich in carvacrol. Used diluted on the skin or in a diffuser as part of a seasonal wellness routine.
Essential oil, not oil of oregano softgels. Always dilute. Never apply it neat, and do not take an essential oil internally without guidance.
The stronger the oil, the smaller the dose and the bigger the dilution. Potency is a reason for more care, not less.
